Christopher Bradley-Hole - The Daily Telegraph Garden
CHRISTOPHER BRADLEY-HOLE
Christopher Bradley-Hole is one of the most influential landscape designers in the world, with 6 gold medals under his belt from the Chelsea Flower Show. Hole's design of the Daily Telegraph Garden for the 2013 Chelsea Flower Show was one of these gold medal winners, deigned following the making of an English landscape, incorporating Japanese garden design, and heavily influenced by contemporary abstract art. Inspiration was taken from the book 'In Praise of Shadows', by Japanese writer Junichiro Tanizaki, that observes the calm and depth of meaning. The planting is comprised of native English Hazel trees with Yew, Box and Beech hedges, bordered by soft grasses and perennials. Split level Japanese style pools break up the blocks of planting and represent a river in the landscape. Lining the back of the garden are a series of Oak columns, representing built structures. The multi-layered garden gives the viewer the perspective of a bird flying over English countryside, with geometric field boundaries, woodland patches and meadows bordering the river.
