Jacques Wirtz - Canary Wharf Jubilee Park

Jubilee Park
Bank St, Canary Wharf, London
Jacques
Wirtz was a Belgian landscape architect, who founded his own firm in 1950.
Wirtz began with garden design but soon broadened into landscape architecture.
His sons Martin (born 1963) and Peter (born 1961) joined the Antwerp firm in
1990, and Wirtz International is the largest landscape design business in
Belgium. Barry Chinn Associates were responsible for delivering the
concept design aspirations of Jacques and Peter Wirtz, for Canary Wharf’s
single largest open space. To create the space, the dock edge was moved south
to locate proposed high rise office towers within the heart of the business
district, that surround the park edge. 1 hectare of space was created as a roof
garden above the structures of the RT3 retail centre and the existing Fosters
Jubilee Line station. The parks bold, curvilinear patterns, organic shapes and
simple yet strong planting pallet create a tranquil contrast to the surrounding
built environment. Dividing the space is a unique 25 pool water feature, raised 1m above ground with each pool containing a 500mm high foaming jet fountain.
