ROBERTO BURLE MARX - Rio Waterfronts

ROBERTO BURLE MARX

Rio Waterfronts

Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Burle Marx has an extensive list of projects to choose from when looking at his portfolio. Strongly stylized and sinuous designs are Marx’s trademark and of these designs, one of the most well-known is Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Abstract forms of different mineral shades and a use of curvilinear paving divide the promenade, with groups of largely monoculture tree planting breaking up the masses of paving. In the particular photograph I chose, the paving patterns sit harmoniously with the architecture leading onto the promenade and help to create a transition between the built environment and the natural beach. Creating a harmony between buildings and landscape is a key goal I hope to achieve within the design of Blackfriars, which will be difficult thanks to the huge array of architectural styles and building ages. I will be taking inspiration from Marx and trying to find an element that will link the built environment of Blackfriars and compliment the genius loci of the area.
